About the Department

Current Status of the Institute

The institute currently provides teaching in the Bachelor's degree programmes Chemistry and Technology of Materials, Chemistry of Biomaterials for Medical Applications, Conservation-Restoration of Arts and Crafts, and Technology of Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage Objects.

In the Master's degree, the Institute provides teaching in the study programme Chemistry and Technology of Materials, specializations in Metal Materials, Biomaterials, Materials in Forensic Chemistry, Nanomaterials, and Materials for Electronics. The Institute also participates in teaching the study programme Technology of Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage Objects.

In doctoral studies, the Institute provides teaching in the study programme Chemistry and Technology of Materials.

In total, the Institute provides teaching of 54 courses in Czech and English (6 of them for the doctoral study programme) and participates in teaching of 4 other courses. In the academic year 2024 / 2025, 25 Bachelor's students, 20 Master's students, and 36 PhD students are studying at the Institute.

Organisationally, the Department of Metal Materials and Corrosion Engineering is now divided into three working groups (Physical Metallurgy, Chemical Metallurgy, and Corrosion Engineering - including the Restoration of Metallic Monuments and Biomaterials), each of which provides a relevant part of the teaching and research activities.

The Institute co-organizes several professional conferences focused on metallic materials and corrosion. These include the Aluminium and Non-Ferrous Metals conference, which centers on developments in advanced non-ferrous alloys, the AKI Conference, dedicated to corrosion and corrosion protection of metals, and the Microscopy and Nondestructive Testing of Materials conference.

The Professor Josef Koritta Foundation operates under the Institute of Metallic Materials and Corrosion Engineering, having been registered in November 1994. The foundation seeks to encourage students at UCT Prague to pursue further studies in fields focused on metallic materials through scholarships and by sponsoring the annually organized Student Scientific Conferences.
