Conservation-restoration of metal works of art and craftsmanship

The corrosion of metals also includes the sub-discipline of Conservation-Restoration of Arts and Crafts Works of Metal, which mainly deals with the restoration and conservation of metal monuments and archaeological finds.  This issue is connected both with the research and determination of the causes of their degradation (corrosion and structural), as well as with the monitoring of the environment in which metal monuments and archaeological finds are located. The sub-field of Conservation-Restoration of Arts and Crafts Works of Metal is closely linked to the activities of museums, depositories, religious buildings, art schools and private collectors, and thus contributes significantly to improving the conditions for the conservation and storage of historical artefacts in these environments.

Research topics:

Degradation of historical objects made of metal materials

  • Study of the mechanism of degradation of lead and tin alloys of organ instruments, stained glass joints, levers and lead seals concerning the presence of admixture elements in the alloys.

Description of historical technologies

  • Archaeometry and research data rescue of archaeological finds with emphasis on the description of historical technologies for the production of metal artifacts.

The influence of the environment on the degradation of historic metal objects.

  • Monitoring the effect of gaseous atmospheric constituents on the degradation of metal artifacts and corrosion monitoring.
