Corrosion engineering is a field whose goal is to increase the sustainability of products, equipment, and structures by protecting them from damage caused by corrosion mechanisms. Losses caused by corrosion amount to three to five percent of the gross domestic product of industrially advanced countries. In addition, corrosion often poses a threat to human health and safety and to the environment. The Corrosion Engineering Group focuses on topics that are highly relevant in the field of corrosion science. These include, for example, the study of corrosion mechanisms in metal casings for the permanent disposal of nuclear waste in deep geological repositories, as well as in biomaterials used for medical implants. Other significant activities of the Corrosion Engineering Group include the study of corrosion-related aspects of hydrogen energy, such as hydrogen-induced embrittlement of metals or the corrosion resistance of fuel cell and electrolyzer electrodes; the service life of materials in conventional and nuclear power generation; the development of organic and metallic coatings for corrosion protection; corrosion monitoring, and the protection of metal monuments.
